When we think about LGBTQ history, it's hard not to picture the incredible icons who stood up for change. These trailblazers faced countless challenges but never backed down. Their courage and determination helped pave the way for so many of us today.
Harvey Milk was one of those legends. He was a politician and activist who became the first openly gay man to be elected to public office in California, becoming a member of the San Francisco Board of Supervisors. He didn't just run for office; he fought passionately for visibility and rights. Milk’s famous words, “You gotta give them hope,” inspire countless activists to this day.
Marsha P. Johnson was a Black trans activist who was at the heart of the Stonewall uprising. She co-founded the Street Transvestite Action Revolutionaries (STAR) to support homeless LGBTQ youth. She also focused on the needs of people of color and those living with HIV/AIDS (Marsha was diagnosed with HIV in 1990). Her spirit and dedication pushed society to acknowledge the importance of intersectionality in the fight for equality.

We can't forget about Sylvia Rivera, Marsha’s close friend and fellow activist. Sylvia was fierce and unafraid to speak out against the injustices faced by the drag and transgender communities. Her work not only helped elevate the voices of marginalized groups but also ensured that everyone had a seat at the table when it came to LGBTQ rights.
And there's the fabulous RuPaul. This iconic drag queen has brought drag culture into the mainstream like never before. Ru’s charisma and humor have broken down barriers and opened hearts. Through drag, he challenges stereotypes and proves that self-expression is powerful. He’s a symbol of what it means to live authentically.
Audre Lorde, whose words and poetry still resonate deeply, was a self-described “black, lesbian, mother, warrior, poet,” she highlighted the intersections of race, gender, and sexuality. Her work reminds us that embracing our identities can fuel powerful change.

And, of course, actress/comedienne Ellen DeGeneres. When she came out on her sitcom in the late '90s, it was a big deal. Ellen transformed how LGBTQ representation looked on TV. Her openness about her sexuality helped people feel less alone and sparked important conversations about acceptance. She continues to use her platform as a space to remind us that we all deserve to express who we are.
These brave people, among many others, show us the power of resistance. Their lives remind us to stay bold, stay loud, and keep pushing for change. Each of their stories adds a rich thread to the vibrant tapestry of our history, inspiring new generations to continue the fight.
